The cultivation of Jojoba
The cultivation of the Jojoba plant in Israel started in the mid. 1960’s when scientists at the Practical Research Institute at Ben Gurion University imported seeds of the Jojoba plant and tried to cultivate them in the Negev. These attempts continued for over a decade during which a number of varieties were checked in order to obtain plants with unique oil characteristics, natural resistance to pests, high harvest potential and an efficient plant structure. In addition, the improvements included more efficient plant feeding using drip irrigation – a new development at that time. Development of the Jojoba plant in Israel
In 1989, Kibbutz Hatzerim decided to upgrade the Jojoba cultivation branch at the kibbutz and in the whole of Israel. A nursery was established for the mother plant and from then on Jojoba was established as an independent branch in the Negev and in the whole of Israel. This step was crowned with success and today Israel is considered to be the producer of the highest quality Jojoba in the world. This achievement in the agricultural and agro technology fields positions "Jojoba Israel" in the first line of Jojoba growers in the world with an average harvest of 3800 kg of seeds per hectares with mechanized harvesting.
